In this blog post we can see the method to calculate concrete in cubic yards of the proposed structure. See the detailed post below to understand well.

How Many Yards of Concrete Do I Need For 24 ft×24 ft×4 in Slab?

The answer is 7.82 cubic yards of concrete for 24×24×4 slab including 10% extra wastage. To calculate concrete in cubic yards, we have following steps that will help us to know the required volume of concrete in the proposed structure. Since, this calculation will give an approx estimate to purchase concrete from the concrete industries. We recommend to purchase 10% extra concrete for your structure due to shrinkage and wastage of concrete at site.

Concrete Calculation for 24×24×4 Slab

We can follow the steps below to find the volume of concrete in cubic yard. In this calculation we will see the examples of 24×24×4 slab, 24×24×5 slab and 24×24×6 slab.

Step-1: Select the Structure for Concreting
First of all identify the structures which need to cast and note down their dimensions separately.

Step-2: Calculate the Volume of the Proposed Structure
In this step you need to calculate the volume of the proposed structure by using dimensions. If you have more than one structure then calculate their volumes separately and add them.

Note: Simply you can calculate area of the structure and multiply with thickness (in case of in case of slab, wall, road etc). For column and beam, you need to calculate cress-sectional area and multiply with length.

Step-3: Convert the Volume into Cubic Yards
After calculating volume of the structure, you need to convert into cubic yard.
If the calculated volume is in mm³, cm³, cubic foot or cubic inch then convert volume into cubic yards.
  • mm³ to cubic yards then divide by "764554858".
  • cm³ to cubic yards then divide by "764554.858".
  • cubic inch to cubic yards then divide by "46656".
  • cubic feet to cubic yard then divide by "27".
The result volume of structure in cubic yards is the quantity of concrete. You are advised to buy 10% extra concrete to maintain the shrinkage factor and wastage at site.

Concrete in Cubic Yards of 24×24×4 Slab

We are taking example of a 24×24×4 slab to calculate the concrete required for the slab casting in cubic yards.

Step-1: Select the Structure for Concreting
Here, the structure is a 24×24×4 slab. The dimension of the slab is 24 feet length × 24 feet width × 4 inch thickness.

Step-2: Calculate the Volume of the Proposed Structure
Volume of the slab
= length × width × thickness of the slab
= 24 feet × 24 feet × 4 inch
= 288 inch × 288 inch × 4 inch
= 331776 cubic inch
= (331776 cubic inch/46656) cubic yards
= 7.1 cubic yards.

Taking 10% extra concrete, then 7.1 + 10% of 7.1 = 7.8 cubic yard.
We need 7.8 cubic yard concrete approximately for a 24×24×4 slab.

Final Result
For casting a 24×24×4 slab, we need 7.82 cubic yards concrete including 10% extra wastage.

Concrete for 24×24×5 Slab

We are taking example of a 24×24×5 slab to calculate the concrete required for the slab casting in cubic yards.

Step-1: Select the Structure for Concreting
Here, the structure is a 24×24×5 slab. The dimension of the slab is 24 feet length × 24 feet width × 5 inch thickness.

Step-2: Calculate the Volume of the Proposed Structure
Volume of the slab
= length × width × thickness of the slab
= 24 feet × 24 feet × 5 inch
= 288 inch × 288 inch × 5 inch
= 331776 cubic inch
= (414720 cubic inch/46656) cubic yards
8.9 cubic yards.

Taking 10% extra concrete, then 8.9 + 10% of 8.9 = 9.8 cubic yards.
We need 9.8 cubic yards concrete approximately for a 24×24×5 slab.

Final Result
For casting a 24×24×5 slab, we need 9.8 cubic yards concrete including 10% extra wastage.

Concrete in Cubic Yards of 24×24×6 Slab

We are taking example of a 24×24×6 slab to calculate the concrete required for the slab casting in cubic yards.

Step-1: Select the Structure for Concreting
Here, the structure is a 24×24×6 slab. The dimension of the slab is 24 feet length × 24 feet width × 5 inch thickness.

Step-2: Calculate the Volume of the Proposed Structure
Volume of the slab
= length × width × thickness of the slab
= 24 feet × 24 feet × 6 inch
= 288 inch × 288 inch × 6 inch
= 331776 cubic inch
= (497664 cubic inch/46656) cubic yards
10.7 cubic yards.

Taking 10% extra concrete, then 10.7 + 10% of 10.7 = 11.8 cubic yards.
We need 11.8 cubic yards concrete approximately for a 24×24×6 slab.

Final Result
For casting a 24×24×6 slab, we need 11.8 cubic yards concrete including 10% extra wastage.
