What is Rebar Meaning in Construction?

"Rebar" is the short form of "Reinforcement Bars" or "Reinforcing Bars" and it is a very essential material for the construction industry. Rebar is made from steel and is designed to provide additional support to concrete and masonry structures that are subjected to various types of forces. The primary function of rebar is to distribute the load evenly throughout the concrete and making it more resistant to bending, stretching or twisting. See the rebar weight chart in detail and formula for rebar weight calculation.
Rebar is available in various grades and sizes with diameters ranging from 6 mm to 64 mm. The most commonly used rebar sizes are #3, #4, #5 and #6 which have diameters of 10 mm, 12 mm, 16 mm and 20 mm respectively.

Volumetric Method For Rebar Weight Calculation (Complex)

In this method the weight of rebar is calculated by multiplying volume of rebar with density of steel.
Formula for rebar weight = [(π×D²/4)×L×ρ],
Where "D" is the diameter of the rebar in meter (convert millimeter to meter by dividing 1000),
"L" is the length of the rebar in meter, and
"ρ" is the density of steel per meter cube (7850 kg/m³).

Example:
Let us consider 10 mm diameter (or 0.01 m) rebar of 1 meter length.
Formula For Rebar Weight
= [(π×D²/4)×L×ρ]
= (22/7)×(0.01²/4)×1×7850
= 0.617 kg/m

Weight of 10 mm diameter rebar of 12 meter length
Formula For Rebar Weight
= [(π×D²/4)×L×ρ]
= (22/7)×(0.01²/4)×12×7850
7.4 kg

Simple Thumb Rule For Rebar Weight Calculation

We can use simplified thumb rule to calculate rebar weight. See the below methods to calculate rebar weight simply and fast.

Rebar Weight Formula Per Meter By Thumb Rule

In this method weight of rebar per meter is calculated as D²/162, where "D" is the diameter of rebar in mm, and "162" is a numerical value used as thumb rule here. The result of calculation is obtained in kg/m.

Example:
Let us consider a 10 mm diameter rebar of 12 meter length,
Formula used for rebar weight per meter
= D²/162
= 10²/162
= 0.617 kg/m.

Weight of 10 mm diameter rebar of 12 meter length
= L × (D²/162), Where "L" is the length of rebar in meter.
= 12 × (10²/162)
= 7.4 kg

Rebar Weight Calculation Formula Per Foot By Thumb Rule

In this method weight of rebar per foot is calculated as "D²/533", where "D" is the diameter of rebar in mm, and "533" is a numerical value used as thumb rule here. The result of calculation is obtained in kg/foot.

Example:
Let us consider a 10 mm diameter rebar of 40 foot length,
Formula used for rebar weight per foot
= D²/533
= 10²/533
= 0.188 kg/foot

Weight of 10 mm diameter rebar of 40 foot length
= L × (D²/533), Where "L" is the length of rebar in foot.
= 40 × (10²/533)
7.5 kg

What is the Rebar Weight Formula?

The formula for rebar volume calculation is  [3.14 × (d² / 4) × L] where d is the diameter of rebar and L is the length of the rebar. Now you can multiply the volume of rebar with density to know the weight of rebar.

Example:
Consider #4 Rebar which D= 12.70 mm and L= 1000 mm.
Density of Steel is 7850 kg/m³
Using formula [3.14 × (d² / 4) × L], volume of rebar is [3.14×(12.70×12.70/4)×1000]= 126613 m
So, Weight of rebar is Volume × Density = 0.000126613 × 7850 = 0.994 kg per meter
Also, you can use D²/162 formula to calculate per meter weight.

What is #3 Rebar Weight?

#3 rebar weight is 0.560 kg/meter or 0.376 lb/foot.

What is #4 Rebar Weight?

#3 rebar weight is 0.994 kg/meter or 0.668 lb/foot.

What is #5 Rebar Weight?

#5 rebar weight is 1.552 kg/meter or 1.043 lb/foot.

What are the Applications of Rebars?

Rebars of various diameters are used in the construction industries to construct various structures like residential and commercial buildings, box culvert or other various bridges, reinforced concrete highways, dams and so many other structures.
