Hello visitors! In this blog post we will see how to calculate number of concrete blocks in a wall with a given size of block, some requirements and considerations in the wall.

How to Calculate Number of Concrete Blocks in a Wall?

To calculate number of concrete blocks in a wall, we have the following calculation. Go through the calculation to understand the complete concept. In this calculation we have considered height of the wall 10 feet (standard height), length of the wall 12 feet and standard block size 16 inch × 8 inch × 8 inch.

Calculate Number of Blocks in a Wall

Here, we have some requirements and considerations to calculate the number of blocks in a wall.

Requirements in the Wall

We have the following requirements
  • A single wall with
  • One gate

Considerations in the Wall

We have the following considerations
  • Wall size (10 feet height × 12 feet length or 120 inch height × 144 inch length)
  • One gate size (7 feet height × 3 feet width or 84 inch height × 36 inch width)
  • Standard lock size (16 inch × 8 inch × 8 inch or 400 × 200 × 200 mm)
  • Mortar thickness (12 mm), Generally 10 to 15 mm
  • Thickness of wall (8 inch or same as thickness of block)

Calculate Area of Each Part of the Wall

Area of the Complete Wall

= Length of Wall × Height of Wall
= 12 feet × 10 feet
= 120 square feet

Area of the Gate

= Height of Gate × Width of Gate
= 7 feet × 3 feet
= 21 square feet

Face Area of a Single Block (Without Mortar)

= Length of Block × Height of Block
= 16 inch × 8 inch
= 128 square inch or 0.889 square feet

Face Area of a Single Block (With Mortar)

= (Length of Block + Thickness of Mortar) × (Height of Block + Thickness of Mortar)
= (16 inch + 12 mm) × (8 inch + 12 mm)
= (406.4 mm + 12 mm) × (203.2 mm + 12 mm)
= 418.4 mm × 215.2 mm
= 90040 mm² or 0.9692 square feet.

How to Calculate Number of Concrete Blocks in a Wall?

Net Area of the Wall For Block Masonry Work

Net Area of Wall

= Area of Complete Wall - Area of Gate (Open Wall)
=  120 square feet - 21 square feet
= 99 square feet

Total Number of Blocks in the Wall

Total number of blocks in the wall

= Net Area of Wall in Square Feet/ Face Area of a Single Block With Mortar
= 99 square feet/0.9692 square feet
= 102.1 Blocks, (Say 102 Blocks).

Taking 10% wastage of blocks during the masonry work, the total number of blocks would be 102 + 10%  of 102 = 112.2 Blocks, Say 112 Blocks.

Final Result

Total number of concrete blocks required in 10×12 feet wall with a gate is 102 Nos with 10% wastage.

Note: If you are building a wall without open area (like- no gate or no window) then you need not to calculate net area. You can calculate with the complete area of the wall.
