Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world, and for good reason. It is strong, durable, and versatile, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. However, the strength and durability of concrete depend on its composition, which is determined by the ratio of its components. In this blog post we are discussing about M20 grade concrete and its calculation for one cubic meter wet concrete.

M20 Concrete Ratio for 1 Cubic Meter

M20 is one of the most commonly used grades of concrete with ratio 1:1.5:3 by volume. It is a medium-strength concrete that is suitable for a wide range of applications, including foundations, columns, beams, slabs and walls. The M20 concrete ratio for 1 cubic meter is a crucial factor that determines the quality and strength of the concrete.

M20 Concrete Ratio For 1 Cubic Meter

What is M20 Concrete Ratio for 1 Cubic Meter?

The M20 concrete ratio for 1 cubic meter is a mix proportion of 1:1.5:3 cement, sand, and aggregates. This means that for every 1 part of cement, 1.5 parts of sand, and 3 parts of aggregates (stone or gravel) are used. This ratio is based on the strength requirement of the concrete, which is 20 N/mm² at 28 days.

The M20 concrete ratio for 1 cubic meter can be represented as follows:

M20 Concrete Cement: Sand: Aggregates Ratio = 1:1.5:3
This ratio is measured by volume, not by weight. Therefore, if we have 1 cubic meter of concrete, we need 1 bag of cement (50 kg), 1.5 cubic meters of sand, and 3 cubic meters of aggregates.

How to Mix M20 Concrete Ratio for One Cubic Meter? Formula

Mixing concrete is a process that requires careful attention to the ratio of its components. To mix M20 concrete for 1 cubic meter, you can follow the following steps:

Determine the Quantity of Materials

Calculate the quantity of cement, sand and aggregates required for 1 cubic meter of concrete based on the M20 concrete ratio 1:1.5:3 by volume.

M20 Grade Concrete Calculation

M20 concrete requires careful attention to the mix ratio of its materials. To determine the quantity of materials for M20 concrete, let us calculate materials for 1 m³ of wet concrete.

Quantity of Materials Required in 1 m³ of M20 Concrete

We are taking following standard data to calculate the quantity of materials in 1m³ of M20 grade concrete:
  • Volume of Wet Concrete = 1 m³
  • Ratio of M20 Concrete = 1:1.5:3
  • Sum of Mix Ratio of M20 = 1+1.5+3 = 5.5
  • Shrinkage Factor = 1.54 (54% extra of total dry volume)
  • Unit Weight of Cement = 1440 kg/m³
  • Unit Weight of Sand = 1680 kg/m³
  • Unit Weight of Coarse Aggregate = 1525 kg/m³

Volume of Dry Materials For 1 m³ Wet Concrete

Volume of Dry Concrete
= Volume of Wet Concrete × Shrinkage Factor
= 1 × 1.54 = 1.54 m³

Quantity of Cement in 1 m³ of M20 Concrete

= Volume of Dry Concrete × (Proportion of Cement/Sum of Mix Ratio) × Unit Weight of Cement
= 1.54 × (1/5.5) × 1440
= 403.2 kg
= 403.2 kg / 50 kg (each bag)
= 8 bags of cement

Quantity of Sand in 1 m³ of M20 Concrete

= Volume of Dry Concrete × (Proportion of Sand/Sum of Mix Ratio) × Unit Weight of Sand
= 1.54 × (1.5/5.5) × 1680
= 705.6 kg

Quantity of Coarse Aggregate in 1 m³ of M20 Concrete

= Volume of Dry Concrete × (Proportion of Coarse Aggregate/Sum of Mix Ratio) × Unit Weight of Coarse Aggregate
= 1.54 × (3/5.5) × 1525
= 1281 kg

Materials Required For 1 m³ of M20 Grade Concrete

Cement = 403.2 kg or 8 bags
Sand = 705.6 kg
Coarse Aggregate = 1281 kg

Quantity of Ingredients of M20 Grade Concrete in m³, cft and kg

As per above calculation, the quantity of ingredients is given below.

Quantity of Dry Ingredients of M20 Grade Concrete in  for 1 m³ Wet Concrete
As per above calculation, the ingredients of M20 grade concrete for one cubic meter wet concrete in m³ is given below.
  • Cement = 0.28 m³
  • Sand = 0.42 m³
  • Coarse Aggregate = 0.84 m³

Quantity of Dry Ingredients of M20 Grade Concrete in cft for 1 m³ Wet Concrete
As per above calculation, the ingredients of M20 grade concrete for one cubic meter concrete in cft is given below.
  • Cement = 9.89 cft
  • Sand = 14.83 cft
  • Coarse Aggregate = 29.66 cft

Quantity of Dry Ingredients of M20 Concrete Ratio for 1 Cubic Meter in kg

As per above calculation, the dry ingredients of M20 grade concrete for one cubic meter concrete in kg is given below.
  • Cement = 403.2 kg
  • Sand = 705.6 kg
  • Coarse Aggregate = 1281 kg

Water Content in M20 Grade Concrete

As per IS:10262, Table-7, maximum water content for 20 mm aggregate in mix for 25 to 50 mm slump range is 186 kg/m³.

Note: This is a volumetric calculation and we have assumed the standard unit weight of cement, sand and coarse aggregate. If the value of unit weight of any ingredients changes, the whole calculation will change.

Procedure to Mix M20 Concrete

  • Prepare the Materials: Ensure that the materials are clean and free from any impurities. Pre-wet the aggregates to prevent the absorption of water from the concrete.
  • Mix the dry Materials: In a mixing container or a concrete mixer, add the dry materials, namely cement, sand, and aggregates, and mix them thoroughly.
  • Add Water: Gradually add water to the mixture while mixing until you achieve the desired consistency. The water-cement ratio should be 0.5 for M20 grade concrete.
  • Mix for 3-5 Minutes: Mix the concrete for at least 3-5 minutes until it is homogeneous and has a consistent texture.
  • Test the Mix: Perform a slump test to determine the workability of the concrete. The slump value for M20 grade concrete should be between 50-100 mm.
  • Pour and Compact the Concrete: Pour the concrete into the mold or formwork and compact it using a vibrator or a tamper. Ensure that the concrete is evenly distributed and free from any air pockets.

"M20 concrete ratio for 1 cubic meter is a mix proportion of 1:1.5:3 cement, sand, and aggregates." This ratio is critical in determining the strength and durability of the concrete. Mixing concrete is a crucial process that requires careful attention to the ratio of its components. By following the steps outlined above, you can mix M20 concrete for 1 cubic meter and achieve a high-quality, strong, and durable concrete.
